Formosa protest reporter kidnapped by Vietnamese authorities

January 13, 2017

Nguyen Van Hoa, a Vietnamese Catholic youth, was arbitrarily arrested by Ha Tinh security police on January 11, 2017. Hoa has reported on various protests against the Formosa Steel Plant in Ha Tinh and Nghe An Provinces in central Vietnam.

Ha Tinh security police arrested Hoa while he was traveling to Ky Anh District in Ha Tinh Province to report on protests by local fishermen. He is currently being held incommunicado at an unknown location.

As of January 13, his family and friends have not received any information regarding his arrest.

Hoa is a citizen journalist and an advocate for social justice. His reporting has focused on the organized actions of Formosa victims in central Vietnam.
