The CFTC and the Committee for an independent labor-union association in Vietnam denounces, on the occasion of the 8th ASEM Summit (Asia-Europe Meeting) in Brussels, the non compliance with the fundamental rights of the workers by the Vietnamese government and more generally the non compliance with Human Rights in this country.

Despite the resolution adopted in November 2009 by the European Parliament against Vietnam, for its repeated and permanent violations of human rights, arrests of activists for Human Rights continue. The creation of labor unions, independent from the State is forbidden. Only the Vietnamese CGT is authorized, as it is the armed wing of the communist Party. It is also better known for its control and supervision of the workers than for the defense of their interests.

The CFTC and the Committee for an Independent Labor-Union Association is calling upon the participants in the 8th summit:

  • to intervene for the immediate release of:
    • Professor PHAM MINH HOANG
    • Pastor DUONG KIM KHAI
    • Ms. TRAN THI THUY
    • Mr. NGUYEN THANH TAM
  • and all other political prisoners and labor union representatives; to urge the Vietnamese government to respect labor-union freedom, freedom of the press, and in particular freedom to receive and send information, freedom of association and freedom of religion;
  • to intervene with the European authorities so that they adopt a much firmer position towards the Vietnamese government, in particular by conditioning aid programs from the European Union to tangible and verifiable improvements of freedom of expression, labor-union freedom and freedom of association, including through the use of the Internet.
