Nguyen Tien Trung studied computer engineering at the Institut National des Sciences Appliquées de Rennes, France. While abroad, Trung began his political activities and founded the Assembly of the Vietnamese Youth for Democracy. He also joined the Democratic Party of Vietnam. Shortly after his return to Vietnam in 2008, Trung was drafted into the military and criticized by authorities for refusing to swear allegiance to the Communist Party.
