Tensions in the South China Sea: Global risks & regional implications

Competition for maritime claims in the South China Sea is not a new issue in the region. But, over the past decade, China has attempted to expand its influence in the area. In that time, the legality of China’s claims have been contested by more than a dozen nations, which most recently include the United States, Australia, and, in a joint statement, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
