An overwhelming majority of Vietnamese said they are eager to welcome President Obama when he arrives in Vietnam later this month.

President Obama is scheduled to make his first visit to Vietnam later this month amidst a growing wave of political convictions and civic action by many Vietnamese. Since late April, thousands have participated in peaceful protests in response to an ecological disaster along the country’s central coast. A “We the People” petition to the White House—created on April 26 and calling for the protection of Vietnam’s environment—garnered over 100,000 signatures in just 48 hours.

Viet Tan’s Facebook poll was conducted from April 23-30, 2016 and received over 6,000 online responses. The poll itself sparked much discourse. Among the thousands of comments, one Facebooker echoed a common sentiment: “I want and hope that Mr. Obama will speak directly with the democracy activists of Vietnam.”
