At least 62 cyber-dissidents, internet users and online journalist are currently imprisoned worldwide. Many different methods are used by governments to censor the internet, including repressive legislation, monitoring internet cafes and controlling ISPs. To denounce government cyber-censorship and to demand more online freedom, Reporters Without Borders is calling people to participate in nine countries that are internet enemies.

A dissapointing start in the WTO

Vietnam become the world trade organisation’s 150th member on 11 January 2007. Hanoi pursue a clever diplomatic strategy to gain admission, promissing progress in human rights. But everything has changed since then and the government has gone after internet users. In the worst crack down since 2002, six cyber-dissidents were arrested in the space of a week in May 2007 and were charged with disseminating anti-government propaganda.
