Nguyen Quang Khanh (Khanh Q. Nguyen) was released today following nine days of detention by the Vietnamese communist authorities. He was arrested while attending a peaceful demonstration in Saigon on March 14.
Of the activists arrested, only Viet Tan member Jennifer Truong remains under detention. She had met with those affected by government corruption, to listen to their concerns and give them a voice in interviews with international media. During the demonstration in front of government offices at 210 Vo Thi Sau Street in Saigon, she joined with protestors in unfurling a banner decrying government expropriation. She stayed with the demonstrators until security police took people away around 10 a.m. that morning.
For members of Viet Tan, campaigning for social justice is a moral imperative and responsibility among compatriots. Both Nguyen Quang Khanh and Jennifer Truong are American citizens of Vietnamese descent.
Viet Tan condemns the Hanoi government’s practice of arbitrary arrest and detention. The communist authorities cannot apply rule by law to prevent people from speaking out against social injustice.
