Mrs. Nguyen Thi Quy
Xom Vinh Hoa, Xa Yen Thanh
Nghe An Province, Vietnam

Dear Mrs. Quy,

I am writing to you with deep respect and sincere concern regarding your husband, Mr. Le Dinh Luong. I want you to know that his case has been brought to my attention and that I understand the extraordinary hardship your family has endured throughout his detention.

As a Member of Parliament of Canada, I have taken steps to raise Mr. Luong’s situation with the appropriate authorities, and I have communicated the seriousness with which Canadians view his wellbeing, his legal rights, and his humane treatment. Please be assured that Mr. Luong’s case is not forgotten. It continues to be a matter of concern within Canada and among members of the international community who follow issues of human rights and dignity around the world.

I know that the burden of this struggle has fallen heavily on you—on your daily life, your responsibilities, and your hopes for your family. No spouse should have to endure prolonged uncertainty about their loved one’s health or safety. Your resilience, courage, and unwavering support for your husband are profoundly admirable.

While I cannot speak on behalf of the Government of Vietnam, nor can I determine the outcome of its internal processes, I can reaffirm that I will continue to raise Mr. Luong’s situation through appropriate channels. I will also continue to encourage the government of Vietnam to uphold its commitments under international law, including its obligations to ensure humane treatment, access to medical care, fair legal processes, and respect for family contact.

Please know that many Canadians—parliamentarians, civil society organizations, and members of the Vietnamese-Canadian community—are keeping your family in their thoughts and advocating for Mr. Luong’s wellbeing.

During this difficult time, I hope you may find strength in knowing that your husband’s situation has not gone unnoticed and that your own voice and perseverance continue to inspire others. If there is information you wish to share or updates you feel are important, my office remains available to receive them and to listen.

With my deepest respect and heartfelt solidarity,

Judy A. Sgro
Member of Parliament
House of Commons
Canada

The “To Lam Party Congress” Establishes the Era of Police-State Rule in Vietnam

The Communist Party of Vietnam officially opens its 14th National Congress today. In the run up to the conclave, To Lam declared that the Congress will determine the country’s direction for the next five years. Thus, the “true owners of the nation” have been completely sidelined—subject to intimidation, monitoring and imprisonment. An atmosphere of fear once again blankets the country, just as it has during previous Party congresses.
