Vietnam’s National Assembly has dealt prime minister Nguyen Tan Dung a blow in its first ever confidence vote.

A third of the lawmakers voiced their disatisfaction with his handling of the Vietnamese economy and also a string of corruption scandals.

The confidence vote, which will become an annual event, aims to deflect growing public anger at the communist regime.

Speakers: Carl Thayer, Emeritus Professor, Australian Defence Force Academy; Dr Phong Nguyen, Australian representative for the banned Viet Tan or Vietnam Reform Party; Dr Ha Hoang Hup, Senior Visiting Fellow, Institute of South East Asian Studies
