Nguyen Van Oai is a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer. He attended the citizen journalism training of the Vietnam Redemptorist News (VRNs) and helped report on the anti-China protests in Vietnam during summer 2011. His arrest is part of a larger crackdown currently totaling 17 human rights defenders (mostly from Vinh Province).
