Kính thưa quý cha và quý anh chị em,
Sáng hôm qua, thứ Năm 28/8/2008, cộng sản Việt Nam đã mở một cuộc lùng bắt anh chị em giáo dân Thái Hà, đặc biệt là những người tích cực tham dự các buổi cầu nguyện hòa bình đòi công lý tại phần đất mà nhà nước đã chiếm dụng trái phép của Dòng Chúa Cứu Thế Việt Nam.
Buổi tối cùng ngày, công an cộng sản đã tấn công dã man anh chị em giáo dân và các linh mục tu sĩ Dòng Chúa Cứu Thế đang cầu nguyện trước trụ sở công an Quận Đống Đa để phản đối việc bắt bớ tùy tiện và trái phép 4 anh chị em giáo dân giáo xứ Thái Hà.
Một số người đã bị đánh đập máu me đầy mặt và đầy người. Có những người bị đánh ngất ngay vệ đường Thái Hà, chưa biết sống chết ra sao. Có những người bị ngất ngay giữa đường Thái Hà khi năm sáu công an cùng lao vào đấm, đá, dùng dui cui điện và gậy đánh đập họ. Một thầy thuộc Dòng Chúa Cứu Thế cũng đã bị đánh trọng thương. Nhiều người bị bắt đưa đi đến nay vẫn không biết bị giam cầm nơi nào.
Anh chị em giáo dân Thái Hà đứng trước những oan khiên của mình đã chọn cách thế cầu nguyện trong hòa bình và nhã nhặn. Lẽ ra, nhà nước Việt Nam phải biết lắng nghe nguyện vọng của người dân và giải quyết vấn đề trong đối thoại trong hòa bình và nhã nhặn. Tuy nhiên, với bản chất tàn bạo không hề thay đổi, cộng sản Việt Nam đã chọn con đường đàn áp dã man những người dân lành vô tội.
Để chận đứng bàn tay đẫm máu của bạo quyền, chúng tôi tha thiết xin các cá nhân và các công đoàn Công Giáo Việt Nam trên toàn thế giới download những mẫu thư gởi cho các vị nguyên thủ quốc gia mà chúng tôi đã soạn sẵn. Xin quý vị ký tên và gởi cho các vị lãnh đạo các nước sớm hết sức có thể để tạo một áp lực quốc tế mạnh mẽ trên nhà cầm quyền Việt Nam.

Dear President Bush,
We are writing this letter to express our deep concerns about the recent dispute between Redemptorists and the Government of Vietnam over a piece of property at Hanoi Redemptorist Monastery. We have been shocked by recent religious and human rights violations against the religious order as well as Catholic faithful who have assembled since January for peaceful prayer vigils at the site of dispute.
The property in question consists of 15 acres of land purchased by the religious order in 1928. After the Communist takeover in 1954, most of the Redemptorists in Vietnam were jailed or deported, leaving a local priest alone in charge of the land. Despite the pastor’s protests, local authorities, following a harsh anti-religion policy, had allowed individuals and state-run organizations to seize the parish’s land one section at a time. The 15-acre plot has been reduced to only about half an acre.
Since 1996, the religious order has repeatedly requested the requisition of the property claiming that it was seized illegally – all to no avail. Redemptorists and their followers in their desperation were left with no choice other than holding peaceful protests to call out for justice from the authorities.
In response, the Government of Vietnam launched a terrorizing campaign against Hanoi Catholics, starting with a series of arrests on August 28. On the same day, numerous of priests and lay people were kicked and beaten brutally by police when they peacefully requested for the release of detainees.
The United States of America has a long tradition of being a protector of religious and human rights throughout the world. We respectfully request that you do everything possible to ensure that the regime in Hanoi desists from all sorts of violent repression of the protestors, and seriously searches for negotiated settlements regarding the confiscated Church property that is at the root of the dispute. The Vietnam government must respect its own laws and international laws that it has signed. It must immediately take firm and concrete action to prevent further religious and human rights violations against followers of religious groups recognizing their rights to practice their faiths free of harassment and oppression. For a far too long period, people of faith have suffered and persecuted under Hanoi’s repressive and brutal rule.
